Saturday & Holiday Programmes

The British DJ & MC Academy have now linked forces with The Newham Academy of Music to deliver a range of twenty-hour programmes supported with a qualification up-to NVQ Level 4 with The Open College Network.

These courses have been especially formulated to give you all the deep skills and musical knowledge you need in:

  1. Music Technology
  2. Instrument Tuition
  3. Music Business
  4. Video Production
  5. Accreditation

 

1. Music Technology

The learning through music workshop is an introduction to music technology, composition and arrangement at LOCN entry to level three this is a nationally accredited course.

Each course of workshops will run for 12 weeks with each session lasting about 2hours. During this time those attending will participate in all the processes involved in composing and recording music, working with industry standard, user friendly equipment.

Students are also allocated studio time for individual practice sessions.

Course areas covered include:

  • Sampling
  • Rhythm programming
  • Sequencing & editing
  • Song structure & arrangement
  • Mixing & mastering

 

2. Instrument Tuition

As part of the programme we also encourage students to learn one musical instrument. (Bass / lead guitar, Keyboard / piano, wind / brass, string section and drums (steel pan-dohl and tabla djembe etc) over the period of the academic year this will be a valuable discipline to utilise and incorporate their new skills within the works created in the sessions as well as encourage traditional elements of musicianship to be part of their work.

At the end of the course, each student will have recorded pieces of music that they have created to take away with them and have a nationally recognised accreditation in musical competence.

 

3. Music Business

Will be delivered by Related records who have a vast experience in understanding the music business, management, agents, and promoters writing & recording and licensing law are also covered.

Both providers offer Short courses in Making distributing and selling your own material, starting your own label, copyright and contracts are all part of the programme.

 

4. Video Production

Phase 1 – Pre production

  • On going practical workshops for young people to form there Production Teams including other roles and responsibilities.
  • Location Spotting - taking digital photographs of locations
  • Devising scripts and shooting schedules

Phase 2 – Production

  • Pre Recorded Interviews
  • Filming
  • Logging material filmed
  • Photography

Phase 3 – Post Production

  • EDL Script and logging
  • Editing programme
  • Final edit Encoding DVD

 

5. Accreditation

Equivalences

The following chart illustrates the approximate equivalences between credit framework levels and other forms of measured achievement.

Level Three NVQ3 GNVQ Advanced A Level
Level Two NVQ2 GNVQ Intermediate GCSE A* - C
Level One NVQ1 GNVQ Foundation GCSE D - G

  • Entry Level 1,2,3
  • Level 3 is a diploma with 26 credits.
  • Level 2 is a certificate with 15 credits.
  • Level 1 is a collection of individual units that can be built towards a certificate or diploma.
