Shine Talent Showcase A Great Success

London Urban Arts Academy & BDJMCA joined forces with Look Ahead (Supported Housing for Young People) to produce the astonishing Shine Talent Showcase featuring young people who have been tutored and trained in only THREE weeks by our academy tutors, Chris Intaface, MC Angel, Yoda Star & Twiggs.

Below is just some of the outstanding feedback recieved!

Alex Moss, participant "Shine was a great experience for me It helped me a lot with my confidence. At first I didn’t want to take part as I recently lost my son, but then I decided to take part as I needed to take my mind of things and I’m glad I did as its helped me a lot as I used what I did to outlet my emotions. I took part in a number of workshops such as singing (where I wrote my own song) DJ-ing where I learnt to beat match and also street dancing"

Louise O’Reilly, Arts Manager / Look Ahead Housing and Care "Shine was brilliant, absolutely brilliant! It was a wonderful evening and I was so proud and impressed by what the young people achieved. It was an evening full of energy, honesty, talent, enthusiasm, commitment and fun. Look Ahead is extremely grateful to the DJ Academy for doing a fantastic job. The workshops were run by gifted professionals that inspired young people and enabled them to learn new skills. The final event was brilliantly hosted by MC Angel and was highly professional with excellent lighting, sound and back stage interviews m I’m sure the participants exceeded their own expectations and had an evening they will never forget. I certainly won't."

Turn Words Into Dreams / June 2010

TURN WORDS INTO DREAMS - Young Persons Live Performance - DJ's, Spoken Wordsmiths, Vocalists - Monday 14th June Charles Cryer Theatre

More often than not Young People from most London boroughs are given a bad press due to the misbehaviours of a certain few, however, there are also pockets of light within these communities that are also worthy of press for the opposite reasons. The London Urban Arts Academy (LUAA) along with the Sutton Youth Service have recognised this and after acquiring the necessary funds from The Arts Council, have teamed together inviting 15 local young people to take part in a 10 week training and skills development workshop, the results of which will be aired in public at the very established Charles Cryer Studio Theatre. LUAA recruited many young people using their inspirational mobile DJ & MC Unit - The Bass Station, offering them an on-the-spot opportunity to get involved. Their aim is to inspire through spoken word and vocal melody.

All young people in the Carshalton and Sutton area are welcome to view the results of their latest development live on Monday 14th June at THE CHARLES CRYER THEATRE from 7.00 – 9.00pm – please contact co-ordinator Jennie Matthias on 07900 204746 to secure a FREE ticket.

DJ VAN HITS THE STREETS OF HORNSEY / April 2010

More than 25 young people from Hornsey have experienced what it feels like to be a DJ or MC for a day and discovered new talents as The British DJ & MC Academy's mobile unit stopped at Campsbourne Road over the Easter holidays.

The two events were organised by Circle 33 Housing Trust in partnership with L&Q, Metropolitan Housing and Family Mosaic.

The events took place at Campsbourne Road, which is in the centre of a large social housing estate. During the sessions, the experienced and passionate crew from The British DJ & MC Academy was on hand to give the local residents of all ages the opportunity to try out their DJing, MCing, lyric writing and mixing talents in their mobile unit called The Bass Station.

Omari, 16, said: "I think the DJ & MC Academy is a great institution which allows young people to have an opportunity to! do things which the community does not provide. The DJ & MC Academy could be used as a distraction to pull youths away from crime. They effected my life by allowing me to get the message across about the black youth crime & justice system."

DJ Trickles, who has been with The British DJ & MC Academy since the beginning, added: "We are the fastest growing youth arts organisation in London and the team is pioneering a new movement by channeling music through developing and promoting young talent, as well as helping young people to build confidence and to gain credibility. The event was a great success, everybody got really engaged had a good time."

The events are part of an ongoing 12-week project and are organised by Circle 33 Housing Trust as part of a larger programme of learning and leisure opportunities to enhance the Life Chances of young people in the area.

Sussan Rassoulie, Community Development Partnership Manager for Circle 33, said: "We! know from our work with young people that many of them are interested in finding out more about a career in music, so are bringing the experts to them so they can have a go and find out more.

"We are very pleased with how everyone got together and involved. We are now hoping to raise funds to enable a number of the young people to take part in a recognised accredited course that can form part of their educational achievements."

Partnership With MHT London / Feb 2009

Young people from Barbot, Edmonton Green and Plevna Estates in Haringey have been given the chance to try out their DJing and MC skills at a free workshop.

Metropolitan Housing Trust London (MHT London) partnered with the British DJ & MC Academy, a company that provides workshops covering DJ and lyrical skills, production and performance, to give residents with an interest in music and production a flavour of the music industry.

The Taster DJ and MC Workshop provided young people with the opportunity to create a mock radio show and try out the roles of DJ, presenter and interviewee. They also took part in a mixing and microphone session during the two hour workshop.

Tony Rodriguez, Community Initiatives Officer at MHT, said: "Young people living in Edmonton and the surrounding area have a huge amount of musical creativity, and this taster workshop gave them an insight into DJing and radio production.

"Depending on the popularity of the workshop, we are also considering running an eight-week accredited course that will develop their talents and may open up the possibilities of a recording career. You never know, we could discover a new Wiley or Trevor Nelson."

As well as providing an insight into DJing, writing and performing of rap-style, vocal and spoken word lyrics, such workshops can be used to teach young people about issues in society and help them to investigate and formulate their own thoughts about the world around them.

"Could You Live With Yourself?" / Nov 2008

These are the words left on a note at a shrine dedicated to Tommy Winston, the popular teenager stabbed to death in a Kentish Town street.

They were written by Tyrell Anderson, one of Tommy's best friends and old schoolmates, just before he handed himself in to the police.

On Monday afternoon, Mr Anderson heard his words read back to him from the dock at the Old Bailey where he is now standing trial for murder. Mr Anderson admits manslaughter but denies the charge of murder.

"Tom you was one of my best pals. I didn't meen to, please believe me. Only God know's why this happened. I'm in a knightmare and I can't wake from it. I don't no the difference between my dreams and real life anymore Tom. For days now I've been wishing this was all a dream, only until I've jus walked to where it happened and seen all the flowers and pictures that I know it must be real. It must be about 04.00 am, knowone is on the road accept for me. Everyone finks im scum and I am...

But I know you no I never meant it and that's all that matters in my life now Tom. Remember all the times we played football together (so many) you was always the best at freekicks. You tought me how to take them Beckham style. You would always pick me out at corners and freekicks. Me, you and Tanny yous'ed to be the best in the whole borough. We all should of made it together. Tom I can't believe I did it. I thought of 101 different ways to end my life and be with you Tom to tell you face to face how sorry I am.

But I wasn't man enough to do any of them. So I'm writing this before I give myself in for good. To tell your family, Phil, D, Whinnie and all the rest that I'm sorry to put you through so much pain. I know what its like to loose someone but not in that way you lost Tommy. You don't deserve to be goin through this. Words can not explain how sorry I am. I no you Hate me and wan't me dead but please believe I never meant to do this, I'm not a murderer even though you think I am and everyone else does. I'm not. Everyone who knows me, knows I'm not that kind of person. Tom, we were friends for at least seven years Tom. We were exactly like each other at 1 stage in our lives, we liked all the same things. Two of them was football and the same girls. I love you Tom, I know I'll be joining you soon Tom. To everyone who knew and loved Tommy I'm so sorry to end his life. I didn't mean to put you through this type of pain. Tommy one of my best pals. I'm so sorry Tom. You didn't deserve what happened to you. Sorry my nigga. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX."
